    • Soup McGee "At the facility, Robins befriended a mentally handicapped boy. He recalled feeding him candy bars, and frequently getting into fights to protect him from being bullied by other residents. One morning, Robins said, he discovered his friend lying motionless. The night before, both he and Robins had been sent to the White House for punishment.

“I went to his bed to check on him and he was cold,” Robins said. “When I came in that afternoon, he wasn’t there.” Robins asked a cottage father what happened to him. “He’s dead,” the man said. He told Robins the boy was being taken to the mental institution and he died.

“No, he was dead, in that bed,” Robins said. “I’m sure of that.”"

  2. #HOFBARRYBONDSNOW "He was the best hitter I ever faced, to be honest with you," Maddux said when asked about the former Giants and Pirates star left fielder during a conference call Wednesday. "When he was in Pittsburgh, he was good. He might have been the best player when he was a Pirate, too. As far as the Hall of Fame is concerned, I definitely respect Barry's ability to play baseball. It was always a privilege to face him. The game revolved around him."

  7. """2) Will people be able to see the doctors they want, when they want?

Even as millions of people gain insurance, they may have trouble getting a doctors’ appointment — especially for a primary-care doctor. The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts the country will be 91,500 physicians short by 2020. There’s also evidence that some of the plans on the new exchanges have narrow networks that exclude popular regional hospitals.

For a bad-case scenario, look no further than Massachusetts, which enacted universal healthcare seven years ago. Now, only half of its primary care doctors accept new patients.

Part of the solution lies not with Obamacare, but with Congress: Medical organizations are urging lawmakers to raise the cap on residencies so that more doctors can be trained."""

    • Soup McGee """"Speaking of which, neoreactionaries are obsessed with a concept called “human biodiversity” (HBD) — what used to be called “scientific racism.” Specifically, they believe that IQ is one of — if not the — most important personal traits, and that it’s predominately genetic. Neoreactionaries would replace, or supplement, the “divine right” of kings and the aristocracy with the “genetic right” of elites.

To call these claims “controversial” would be putting it lightly, but they underpin much of anti-egalitarian and pro-traditionalist claims neoreactionaries make. Delving into the scientific debate over race, genetics and IQ is beyond the scope of this article, but I’ve included some links on the topic in the reading list.

It’s not hard to see why this ideology would catch-on with white male geeks. It tells them that they are the natural rulers of the world, but that they are simultaneously being oppressed by a secret religious order. And the more media attention is paid to workplace inequality, gentrification and the wealth gap, the more their bias is confirmed. And the more the neoreactionaries and techbros act out, the more the media heat they bring."""

  25. Soup McGee likes an article.
"All of this is all wrong in ways that have all been explained before. So just a few brief observations:

    1. Statements about climate trends must be based on, er, trends. Not individual events or occurrences. Weather is not climate, and anecdotes are not statistics.

    2. Global warming is actually expected to increase "heavy precipitation in winter storms," and for the northern hemisphere, there is evidence that these storms are already more frequent and intense, according to the draft US National Climate Assessment.

    3. Antarctica is a very cold place. But global warming is affecting it as predicted: Antarctica is losing ice overall, according to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. However, sea ice is a different matter than land-based or glacial ice. Antarctic sea ice is increasing, and moreover, the reason for this may be climate change! (For more, read here.)

Finally, just one last thing. When it's winter on Earth, it's also summer on Earth...somewhere else. Thus, allow us to counter anecdotal evidence about cold weather with more anecdotal evidence: It's blazing hot in Australia, with temperatures, in some regions, set to possibly soar above 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the coming days."
